FIS has released the latest ski equipment update which will impact FIS level athletes in the 2012-13 season and onward.

Over the past several seasons, FIS has undertaken considerable work in trying to find ways to reduce the risk of injury and improving safety, and this has been an important focus of the work of the Alpine Committee and its Alpine Technical Equipment Working Group. The FIS Injury Surveillance System was set up in 2005 together with the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre and as part of the project the University of Salzburg with institutions from Lausanne and Davos focused on three main injury risk factors for Alpine ski racing: course setting/speed, snow conditions and equipment (combination of ski, binding, plate and boot). The equipment project involved the development of special ski prototypes through the support of the ski manufacturers. Last summer FIS, the ski industry and the University of Salzburg defined the specifications in terms of radius, length, standing height and ski plates with the goal of gaining more safety and a number of prototype skis have been built for downhill and giant slalom and recently retired World Cup racers tested these prototypes last season.

Following the results of the prototype testing, new specifications for implementation in 2012/13 for Downhill, Super-G and Giant Slalom skis, as well as standing height for men and ladies have been approved by the Council on proposal of the Alpine Committee and its Working Group for Technical Equipment.

As far as the timing of the implementation of the new regulations is concerned, these specifications will apply in the 2012/13 season at World Cup, European Cup and World Junior Championships level. For the other Continental Cups (ie. Australia New Zealand Continental Cup) and FIS level races, the new specifications will apply in the 2013/14 season. This mean´s that these changes will affect MBRC athletes from the 2013/14 season onwards (1997 born athletes will move in the 2013 SH season into the FIS competition age).

The changes are designed to increase safety, by controlling speeds and creating a more stable / slightly less reactive ski. MBRC is supportive of these changes. Although the increase in radius / length appears to be relatively significant, we are told that the new skis have been working well through the testing process. T

Overview of changes

Radius getting bigger in GS, Super G and Downhill

SL radius likely to increase as well, however this is not regulated

Minimum width underfoot consistent with current specs (in fact, DH skis go from min. 67mm to min. 65mm)

Stand height getting lower for speed events; down to 45mm from 50mm; stand height in tech (SL & GS) does not change from the current 50mm

Max. width of 95mm applied to the shovel of GS, Super G and Downhill skis

MBRC skicross athlete Brooke Dunleavy stood up for the first time today surpassing her medical staff’s expectations by weeks. She is “SO STOKED” to be progressing!

Brooke (SSA Skicross Development Team) suffered serious injuries after a training crash at Mora, Sweden. She was in intensive care for days and has fractures to her C5,C6,C7 vertebraes, multiple fractures to her pelvis and also both femurs were dislocated. She is still in Sweden for treatment at Uppsala University Hospital.

SSA SX coach Shawn Fleming is updating on the status of Brooke Dunleavy:

“The good news is starting to come. The surgeons are very surprised at how quickly she is healing. They are saying now that they think there might be no surgery on either the neck or the pelvis. (…) They think there may be a fracture in her leg and are going to X-ray again. If there is no fracture, they are hoping to try to get her on her feet by the end of the week. (…) They are already starting physio and the left leg has feeling back in spots and some control in foot and toes!

Obviously the road to recovery is still long and Brooke will be in Sweden for some weeks to come but all in all this positive news is a bit of a sigh of relief.
Here is hoping the good news continues.”

Continue reading for a Facebook message of Jan and Peter Dunleavy:

“Well this is a first-Brooke has given permission (well almost) for me to write on her Facebook. Peter and I just wanted to thank everyone for the hundreds of Facebook and Newschooler posts of love, encouragement and support.

You have no idea how much you have all helped in Brooke’s recovery so far. 24 hours a day, lying in her bed flat on her back she sparks up every time she hears Facebook ping. You would be so proud of her fight for recovery and her endurance of pain without one complaint. The hospital staff have said that she is truly inspirational in her fortitude and endurance.

Thank you all so, so much. Please continue to stay in touch with her and I know she will be back on Facebook personally very soon. Love to everyone from Jan & Peter.

PS.: I have also promised Brooke that I will never complain about her being on Facebook or Newschoolers again.”
